Angeliki & Meletis

A windy wedding in Magoula, Elefsina

The bride and groom at the church's wooden doors, between two arches of pink and white flowers.

At the Church of the Analipsi in Magoula, near Elefsina, the wind decided it wanted a part in Angeliki and Meletis's wedding. It blew so hard that it knocked the church decorations over, and a decorative mirror broke. Some guests like to make an entrance, but this one outdid them all.

The day had started far more quietly. Angeliki sat on a chair in the living room while the make-up artist worked on her face, and three people on the sofa watched with big smiles, as if they had front-row seats. On the table in front of them, brushes and palettes everywhere.

Somewhere in between, a black sports car pulled up on a cobbled street under the trees, and I could not resist taking a picture of it. Inside the church, under painted walls and rows of saints along the arches, Meletis held Angeliki's hand in front of the ceremony table.

Outside, against the stone front of the church, two arches of pink and white flowers framed the wooden doors. The two of them stood there for a portrait, and then Angeliki stayed a moment on her own in front of the doors, holding her bouquet of white and peach flowers, and gave me a wide smile.

In the evening, at Ktima Stratigi, the dance floor filled up. Angeliki and Meletis danced hand in hand with their family in a line, she laughed out loud, and with one hand she lifted the hem of her dress so she could get the steps right.
