Wedding
Vasilis & Olga
Rice on the steps, sparks on the dance floor

The rice came down like snow over the marble steps of the church, and Vasilis held out his palm to catch some, as if he wanted proof it was real. Next to him Olga lifted her dress with one hand and laughed her way down. That is the moment I would start their story with, but let me go back a little.
Getting ready, Vasilis fixed his tie in the mirror with a smile. At Olga's, eight women in bright dresses gathered around her for a photo, and she knelt in front of them with both hands up and a big grin. The rings waited on a silver tray among white sugared almonds.
Inside the church, under the frescoes and a huge chandelier, Vasilis and Olga stood behind the tall white candles tied with olive branches. Beside them stood a man in a pink suit, which is not something I see at every wedding.
At the reception they had their first dance on a white wooden floor. Fountains of sparks went up around them, and at the long table the guests raised their phones. Vasilis and Olga danced holding each other close, looking at one another through the falling light.
