Wedding

Vasilis & Sissy

A wedding beneath a large tree

The bride in a flower crown sits as the groom rests on the ground beside her under pines, a flower-covered table behind.

Vasilis's uniform was laid out on the bed piece by piece: the white jacket with gold buttons and red shoulder boards, the black trousers with a gold stripe, the bow tie, the cummerbund and a pair of very shiny shoes. That is how Vasilis and Sissy's wedding began for me, with everything in its place before anyone put it on.

Sissy, in a flowered robe with her hair already in curls, was doing her own make-up in front of a large mirror. I photographed her through the reflection, because that is where all the concentration of the moment was.

The ceremony was outdoors, under a large tree with string lights in its branches and white chairs set out on stone paving. A little boy in a navy suit and red tie held the bouquet of pink roses and feathery pampas, with Vasilis standing behind him, hands on his shoulders. A little later the priest raised the wedding crowns above the couple while the guests watched from their seats around them.

For their portraits we went in among the pines. Sissy wore a crown of pink roses and pearls around her neck. In one of those photos Vasilis, in a navy waistcoat and white trainers, sits on the ground beside her, a small table full of flowers behind them, looking up at her.
